LEGAL ACTION CENTER
Founded in 1973, the Legal Action Center (LAC) uses legal and policy strategies to fight discrimination, build health equity, and restore opportunity for people with arrest and conviction records, substance use disorders, and HIV or AIDS. LAC has utilized a multi-pronged approach to achieving their mission, which includes: direct legal services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, education and training, and coalition-building.
LAC seeks to end punitive responses to health conditions like addiction, mental illness, and HIV or AIDS, and to create equitable access to affordable, quality treatment. Offering free legal services through their New York City office, they support individuals who have arrest or conviction records, substance use disorders, HIV, or AIDS and face discrimination in health care, employment, housing, education, and more. Their work mobilizes to create a society that upholds the civil rights of all individuals, regardless of their history of justice involvement or medical condition. LAC aims to dismantle the historic and persistent impact of systemic racism that has fueled mass incarceration and disparate community health systems.
Accepting on behalf of the Legal Action Center, will be their Director and President, Paul N. Samuels.

Support Opportunities:
Companies like Clinique, Coca-Cola, and Goldman Sachs have committed to social, economic, and racial justice, by supporting the Urban Justice Center. Join these, and other companies, in their support by sponsoring the 2024 Urban Justice Center Community Justice Awards Gala.
Companies can partner with UJC on the 2024 Gala to achieve their business goals:
- Provide thought leadership around social justice initiatives
- Showcase corporate social responsibility
- Engage employees, customers and stakeholders alike
These last years proved we must urgently come together to reconcile the disparities in this country – work the Urban Justice Center has been doing since 1984, by providing essential free legal support to the poor (from survivors of domestic violence, to LGBTQIA+ youth, to homeless families, to many more), and mentoring the next generation of leaders in the fight for justice.
